Volodymyr Arnoldovych Potulnytskyi (born 1958) is a Ukrainian historian, Doctor of Historical Science (1992), Professor of the Department of Ancient History of Ukraine and Special Historical Subjects (2002). Since 1992, he has been a leading researcher at the Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Source Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Education, degrees and titles

Volodymyr Potulnytskyi graduated with honors from the Faculty of History of Lviv University (1980), where he received training as a medieval historian under the guidance of an expert in the Huguenot Wars, Professor Anatoliy Lozynskyi and a researcher of the Spanish reconquest, associate professor Zoya Kalinina. He presented his diploma project “Anglo-Spanish Political Relations in the Second Half of the Sixteenth Century (Based on Foreign Sources).” [7, 11]

Professional activities 

After graduating from university, Volodymyr Potulnytskyi was a lecturer of the history of USSR and then an associate professor of the Department of Social Sciences at Lviv Conservatory (1980-1989) [11]. From 1989 to 1992, he was a doctoral student at the Department of History of the USSR at Kyiv University [11]. He was an assistant professor of the Department of Historiosophy of Kyiv University teaching the course “The History of Political Thought in the West and Ukraine” (1992 – 1994) [18]. He was a professor at the Department of Ancient History of Ukraine and Special Historical Disciplines of Lviv University teaching the courses “Historiosophy and Historiography” and “Ancient History of Europe with a Priority Consideration of the History of Ukraine” (1999-2002) [11]. Since 1992, he has been working as a leading researcher at the Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Source Studies of the NAS of Ukraine [11, 16]. In search of his own path in historical science, he focused on the issue of the intellectual history of Ukraine in the European context presenting its first synthesizing vision as a historical and methodological phenomenon, as well as the problem of the hetman ideology and dynastic history of Ukraine in the world historical context [10, 12, 19]. Pursuing the legitimization of the traditional conservative idea, continuing in Europe and discontinued in the post-Soviet area, in particular in Ukraine, he established creative cooperation with leading foreign historians from North America, Europe, the Middle and the Far East [17, 19, 20, 21]. Creative contacts with leading foreign scientists contributed to Potulnitskyi’s search, discovery and study of various sources on the dynastic history of Ukraine found in archives and libraries of many countries of the world [12, 20, 23, 24]. Owing to his monographs, articles, speeches and contacts, he has become a leading expert in shaping the dynastic history and historiography of Ukraine in the European context, as well as its legitimization in the international academic community [10, 12, 19, 20, 23, 24]. He is an author of fundamental works on historiography, intellectual history, historiosophy, and dynastic history.

Major academic achievements

The author of the first synthesis of Ukrainian historiography and political thought in exile in terms of the development of its history and theory, stages of development [monographs 1, 2, 3].

The creator of Ukrainian historiosophy  in terms of the development of its subject, method and theory [monographs 4, 6].

The author of the theoretical foundation of the dialectic of Ukrainian and world history [articles 7, 17, 18].

The author of the concept of the integration of the Ukrainian history into the European and world history taking into account the historical visions of dominant and kindred nations (Russian, German, Jewish, Polish) [monograph 7, articles 3, 4, 5, 6, 8].

He is the author of studies on the sources of German, Russian and Polish influences on the development of the Ukrainian historical and political thought [monograph 4, articles 4, 9, 14, 22].

The author of the concept of the dynastic history of Ukraine in the context of the dynastic history of Central and Eastern Europe [monograph 6, article 10].

The author of innovative studies on the history of diplomatic relations between Ukrainian monarchists with Great Britain and Japan in 1926-1943 [monograph 5, articles 15,19,32]. 

The author of the first vision of the historiosophy and historiography of the outstanding Ukrainian scholar Omeljan Pritsak [monograph 7, articles 20,29,30,31).

School of thought

He created his own school of thought in historiosophy and intellectual history, in which, based on the the author’s scholarly methods (idea – territory – alternatives, etc.), his students studied such urgent problems of historical studies as the phenomenon of restoration of the dynastic form of government in Europe and Ukraine in the 17th-20th centuries, the phenomenon of the European conservative revolution with a special consideration of Ukraine, the specifics of Polish-Lithuanian-Russian relations of the late Middle Ages, the ideas of the main schools of thought in Polish historiosophy, the specifics of the foreign policy doctrines of Japan and the European Union and their evolution in historical development, and other issues [13, 14, 15].

Volodymyr Potulnytskyi worked as a guest researcher and guest professor at Harvard, Charles, Vienna, Cologne, Hokkaido, Jerusalem University, the Institute of Central and Eastern Europe of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute of East European Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Herder Institute for Historical Studies of Central and Eastern Europe in Marburg and others (1990-2017).

Having formed as a historian in the Soviet system of historical education, he underwent specialized training from leading foreign researchers, in particular on the history of Ukraine with Omeljan Pritsak at Harvard and Kyiv universities (1990-1994), the history of Russia with Andreas Kappeler at the University of Cologne (1995-1996) and the history of East European Jewry by Mordecai Altshuller at the University of Jerusalem (2000).

He gave lectures on subjects of his research at Harvard, Columbia Universities (USA), Cologne, Munich Universities, Herder Institute in Marburg (Germany), Charles University, Central European Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic), Hokkaido, Tokyo University (Japan), Vienna University (Austria), Aarhus University (Denmark), University of Jerusalem (Israel), Oxford University (Great Britain) and others (1986-2017).
